The fact is, all drugs may do some damage - from Panadol to Methamphetamine.
It's hard to say 'X is bad' 'Y isn't bad' - it's just a scale of less bad/more bad.
MDMA is definitely on the less bad end of the scale, especially when done right.
MDMA is much worse when you don't do it properly. It's far more common for the "MDMA" or "molly" you are buying to not be pure MDMA. If done correctly, and only if done correctly, MDMA can be used every few months with very minimal damage.
MDMA is constantly terribly missrepesented in the media.
These people are unfornately almost certainly ingesting various other compounds, sold as MDMA, &/or the media love to call whatever caused someone harm 'MDMA'.
"During the first two days of the Electric Zoo music festival, two concert-goers have died and at least four others became critically ill and have been placed in intensive care at area hospitals. Definitive causes of death have not yet been determined, however, both appear to have involved the drug MDMA (ecstasy, or molly)."
There are many many things wrong with the above sentence.
Firstly, if these individuals were actually taking pure MDMA and had reasonable amounts of water, the chance of them becoming critically ill like this are slim to none.
Secondly, MDMA IS NOT THE SAME THING AS MOLLY, NOR IS ECSTASY.
MDMA is the name of the compound that people like the effects of that is often referred to as ecstasy or molly.
Molly is a nickname for MDMA - if you are getting 'molly', and you think that it is purer because it is in a gelatin capsule rather than a pressed pill, you are probably right - I'd bet on the average gelatin capsule being safer than a pressed pill, however, averages lie, and dealers love to save money.
Buying 'molly' does not mean you are getting pure MDMA.
Just because it is powdered, and not pressed, does NOT mean you are getting pure MDMA.
This is an unfortunate consequence of MDMA being illegal - when people struggle to get access to something they really want, people will settle for a substance that they are less sure is pure.
Molly: Nickname for MDMA. Generally refers to the powdered form of MDMA. Just because they say it is molly doesn't mean it's pure MDMA.
MDMA: The actual compound. This is what people are after when they are after Molly/Ecstasy. Just because they say it is MDMA doesn't mean it's pure MDMA!
Ecstasy: Bit of a looser term - just generally refers to pills that supposedly contain MDMA. Ecstasy pills often add amphetamines and other stimulants (or other worse mixes) for endurance and an extra high.

Buy a damn test kit! See the links below. Either that or get it from a really trustworthy source, like the Silk Road.
